Using the Moments CineBloom filter
Disclaimer: This article is not sponsored. I am giving you my honest feedback using this product that I bought with my own money.
After starting my photography journey, I discovered a style of photography that resonates with me. I am talking about the cinematic style, which makes the pictures look like coming straight from a movie.
I am planning to make a dedicated post about achieving the cinematic style, but that will be for later, as I am still experimenting. For now, I will only focus on the diffuse light effect and how to achieve it with a filter.
Moments CineBloom filter
The Moments CineBloom filter
The key to unlock dreamy lights for your pictures
This filter is produced by Moments and can be bought for less than $100, the price depends on the size. There is 2 variations of it:
10%
20%
I went for the 10% one as I found that the 20% would have been a bit too much for my needs.
It comes with a nice box engraved with the logo of the company. The box is sturdy, I carried it in different countries, took the airplane with it and had it in my backpack during long days of exploration. The filter never got damaged nor the box itself and there is even a small tissue inside the box to clean the filter of any dirt that can be present on it.
The content of the box
I must say that I was impressed by the quality of this product.
The filter itself has a red border, with the technical information engraved on it. I like this design and it screws really well on the lens.
The filter design
I really like this red ring, it adds a “professional” touch to my lens.
Using it is pretty easy, like any filter, you just screw it on your lens and you are good to go. However, to really see the effect, you need to be aware of the way you are going to shoot your pictures and your position against the light. I found that facing the lights is often the best choice, at least for me.
My experience with it
After using it for a while on my 85mm lens, I can say that it really shines at night, especially when there is many lights around. Here are some pictures I took with it.
A noticeable effect of the filter is the smooth diffusion of the light. At first, I was a bit skeptical about this kind of filter, thinking that it would bring too much effects on the pictures, but after seeing some photos taken with it, I thought it would be a good idea to get one. And gosh, I am so happy I bought it. It really elevates the quality of my pictures.
“That’s nice, but what if I take pictures during the day?”
For day pictures, the effect is less noticeable, but the bokeh is a lot smoother than usual. I took some shots with it, but to be honest, I need to experiment a bit more using it during the day. I saw some amazing pictures taken with this filter in full sunlight so I would not be worried too much about it.
Conclusion
I want to experiment much more taking photos with this filter, but as I am living in a country that is mainly lit by overcast lights, I will need to be a bit creative and thoughtful about the kind of pictures I want to shoot with it. Hopefully, I often travel to Asia and especially big cities like Tokyo or Bangkok, where taking pictures is a joy at night, because of all the neon lights everywhere.
Would it be a good filter for portrait photography? I don’t know, but for street, absolutely!
That being said, if you are hesitating to buy one, I would say: don’t hesitate and get one, you will love it.
